What are PC, PP, Tritan?
PC is a linear macromolecule polymer containing carbonate group in molecular chain, which can be divided into aliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic and other types. At present, the industrial production of PC is aromatic polycarbonate.
PP is a kind of thermoplastic resin prepared by polymerization of propylene. It is non-toxic, odorless and unaffected by humidity, but becomes brittle at low temperature, is not wear-resistant, and is easy to age. Common acid and alkali organic solvents have little effect on it. Among the daily necessities we contact, PP can be found in baby bottles, space cups and other products.
TritanTritan, the full name of Tritan Copolyester, is a new generation of materials developed by Eastman. It is a copolyester of terephthalic acid with tetramethylcyclobutanediol (CBDO) and cyclohexanediol. Tritan plastic does not contain bisphenol A, has passed the US FDA certification, and has been used by some Lock & Nike products.

What’s the difference between these three materials?
In daily use, people are most concerned about the following points:
- Tolerance to maximum temperature
PP can withstand 100℃, glass transition temperature of Tritan products can reach 120℃, and PC can reach 137℃.
PC and Tritan are equal, higher than PP
The three have good chemical resistance, but bisphenol A is easy to separate out after scratch on PC. Tritan has obvious advantages in chemical resistance. Tritan has obvious advantages in chemical resistance. PP and Tritan can be used in food contact; BPA can cause endocrine disorders, threaten the health of fetuses and children, and obesity caused by precocious puberty, cancer and metabolic disorders is considered to be related. As a result, PC gradually withdraws from the packaging field of direct contact with food.
How to Choose in Use？
- PC has high transparency and high temperature resistance, but BPA makes PC gradually withdraw from food container applications, but it still has a wide range of applications in other industrial fields.
- PP has relatively poor transparency and relatively high security. The heat resistance of PP is the lowest of the three materials, and the use temperature cannot exceed 100 ℃
- Tritan is highly transparent and has a temperature resistance of more than 100 ℃. It is relatively perfect among the three materials, but there are also some data on its safety that have not been fully verified.
Of course, Tritan is the best choice for countries whose products are exported to countries with BPA bans.
When choosing products, the most important thing is to obtain them from the regular channel. Secondly, Tritan products can be selected for the consideration of BPA and heat resistance, but the price will be relatively expensive.
